You’ve probably heard about the Khomas Environmental Education Programme (KEEP).
This interactive environmental education programme was designed and is implemented by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, and we’re very proud to support the work. So we were thrilled to receive a recent update on their progress.
Last year, KEEP hosted a total of 2,452 Namibian primary school learners, accompanied by 95 teachers from 24 different schools and organisations in and around Windhoek. For most of the students, their KEEP experience will be their first ever outing of this kind – their first day in the bush seeing wildlife including giraffe. The programme aims to raise environmental awareness and educate the children about conservation.
Each of the youngsters receives a workbook, which is regularly updated to keep it fresh and relevant and linked to the Namibian Primary School Curriculum.
Last year, the KEEP team hosted a group of second year Nature Conservation students from the Namibia University of Science and Technology for the second year in a row, taking the students out to observe a typical KEEP field day and experience environmental education in action.
Every year, the KEEP team celebrated World Giraffe Day on 21 June – the longest day (or night here in Africa) for the tallest animal! World Giraffe Day is an exciting opportunity to get children excited about giraffe. Maybe you will join us to celebrate next year?!
