WALK WITH THE WILD THINGS

Join Aleksandra Ørbeck-Nilssen, model, actress, author and earth activist, in Namibia on a 9-day walk through the Namib desert in support of the Desert Lion Conservation Project, a long-term project run by Dr. Flip Stander and IRDNC to address the struggling population of desert lions in northwest Namibia through human-lion conflict mitigation and monitoring.

Aleks has worked in Namibia for many years on projects close to her heart, using her celebrity platform to raise awareness about human rights, empowerment, sustainable living and wildlife conservation. Her walks have traversed Namibia and brought many issues to light with her passionate commitment to making a difference. This is your chance to join her on a once in a lifetime trip across the iconic Namib Desert.

Itinerary

Day 1: 31st May 2020

Arrive at Hoanib Valley Camp, deep in north-western Namibia’s Kaokoland region.

Accommodations

The journey begins in Natural Selection’s Hoanib Valley Camp, an elegant, 6-bedroom tented camp sheltered by towering mountains. The stylish lounge area has a well-stocked drinks cabinet, veranda, and outdoor and indoor dining areas whilst outside, the fire pit is the perfect spot for an early-morning coffee or to watch the stars unfold as darkness falls. There is also a small plunge pool in which to cool off.

Day 2: 1st June 2020

Explore the area around Hoanib Valley on game drives and walks, meet the lion conservationists and visit a local village to learn more about community life.

Days 3 – 6: 2nd – 5th June 2020

Today, you’ll begin your walk across the Namib Desert along the very paths that the lions take, from mountain ridges to sandy dunes and dry riverbeds. Here, lions move greater distances
than any other lion population in Africa and on each day, you will walk up to around 20 kilometres (12.5 miles) before falling soundly asleep in your mobile tent in the evening.

Accommodations

Whilst on the walking safari, you will sleep in comfortable mobile tents along the way. Although simple, rest assured that the water will be hot, the food tasty and the company, fantastic!

Day 7: 6th June 2020

On the last day of the walk, you’ll traverse the dry Hoarusib River where clay formations look like castles and where ephemeral river vegetation turns to dunes in the earth’s most ancient desert. The end of the journey takes you over the dunes and down to the cool breezes of Shipwreck Lodge.

Day 8: 7th June 2020

Enjoy all the activities on offer from the lodge, including visits to Mowe Bay seal colony, quad biking, sand boarding, game drives and sundowners on the dunes.

Accommodations

You will end at the unique Shipwreck Lodge on the Skeleton Coast. Designed to look like the enigmatic shipwrecks that dot the sandy shores, it’s a quirky yet luxurious lodge with 10 cosy cabins. All are ensuite (with indoor showers), solar powered, and have wood burning stoves to ward off the coastal chill.

Day 9: 8th June 2020

Depart Shipwreck Lodge for your onward travel plans…

Additional Information

When to Go & What to Pack:

The trip will be departing at the beginning of June which is a beautiful time in north-western Namibia. The days are sunny and warm with a maximum temperature of 26°C to 30°C, which is the perfect climate for walking. It does however get a little colder at night and into the early mornings, and you can expect temperatures around the 18°C mark or perhaps lower.

When walking, we recommend wearing long trousers and comfy socks and shoes. You don’t necessarily require professional walking boots but remember, you will be covering long distances on foot, so please bring something sturdy that is up to the challenge. Sunglasses and a hat are a must, as is sunscreen and a light sarong or scarf that can be used as a cover up. Please also include a light jacket, flip flops and a swimming costume in your bag.
