GweGwe Beach Lodge steps up to Two MICHELIN Keys, as Shipwreck Lodge retains the same rating

The 2026 MICHELIN Guide announcement has just been released, and two of our lodges are celebrating. Shipwreck Lodge in Namibia has retained its Two MICHELIN Key status, and GweGwe Beach Lodge on South Africa’s Wild Coast has been upgraded from One Key to Two.

The Keys launched worldwide in 2025, when Shipwreck was awarded Two and GweGwe was awarded One. A year on, the two very different places now share the same exceptional standard.

GweGwe Beach Lodge: a hidden gem on the Wild Coast

Of GweGwe, our hidden gem on South Africa’s remote Wild Coast, a place as untamed as it is beautiful, the MICHELIN Guide states: ‘GweGwe Beach Lodge sits on land once lost and reclaimed. This stretch of South Africa’s Wild Coast was returned to its original communities in 2004, after decades of forced removal under colonial and apartheid rule. Today, the lodge is owned by a seven-village trust and run in partnership with conservation-focused operator Natural Selection. There are just nine rooms, each with views of the sea, private plunge pools, huge decks, and interiors that echo the landscape in tints of driftwood, sea grass and stone. From bed or bath, the ocean is always in sight.’

The land here was always the point: dramatic cliffs, tumbling waterfalls, pockets of dense swamp forest and crystal-clear waters that we sought to protect. The unique combination of habitats, species diversity and cultural significance makes Mkambati Nature Reserve, in which the lodge sits, a biodiversity hotspot in South Africa. Its location supports marine life, rare and endemic plant species and a variety of bird species. The area is also a sacred site for the local Xhosa people, containing archaeological sites dating back thousands of years. This is a place where you can spend the day wildlife-watching, beaching and exploring, before being lulled to sleep by the Indian Ocean.

Shipwreck Lodge: freedom, beauty and solitude on the Skeleton Coast

According to the MICHELIN Guide, ‘designed in tribute to the numerous shipwrecks on the so-called Skeleton Coast of Namibia, the Shipwreck Lodge is nothing if not unique: its cabins lie in a row a mile inland, surrounded by picturesque dunes, looking out towards the Atlantic. They’re designed in a contemporary style that refers to shipwrecks without lapsing into imitation, and the interiors are as plush as the environment is unforgiving. With just ten units, it’s a tranquil place, even when everyone’s gathered in the main lodge for dinner or drinks; outings include inland 4×4 excursions and visits to Möwe Bay or the nearby beaches.’

Towering dunes and windswept plains become indistinguishable from icy Atlantic waters, shrouded by rolling, mysterious fog. Lichens, clay castles, seal colonies, elephants and even specifically adapted lions are but a few of the treasures the desert might reveal as your stay unfolds. Life here is unpredictable – as the morning mist unfolds it’s impossible to know whether the day ahead will hold desert lions, roaring dunes or a watercolour sunset. This is a place quite unlike any other, with stories that began long before any of us dug toes into the sand and will end only when the desert decides. The lodge sits reverential of its surroundings, designed to echo this land’s narrative, evocative of the many shipwrecks that punctuate this mesmerising coastline.

What a Michelin Key means

Since the 1920s, MICHELIN Stars have guided epicures to the world’s finest eateries. The MICHELIN Key was introduced to do the same for accommodation, recognising exemplary places to stay.

The Guide asks that hotels excel in design, architecture, personality and service. Keys go only to the most outstanding of them, those that demonstrate excellence in architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the setting. As MICHELIN puts it, ‘our Key hotels don’t just fulfil one of these criteria. They are the best of the best in all categories.’

Hotels can be awarded One, Two or Three Keys. A Two Key stay is described as exceptional: a hotel that’s unique in every way, where a memorable experience is always a guarantee, of character and charm, and run with obvious pride and considerable care.

Two coasts, two Keys

One lodge looks out over the Indian Ocean from clifftops, waterfalls and swamp forest; the other rises from fog-wrapped dunes on the edge of the Atlantic. They share little in landscape, but both offer a stay you simply won’t find anywhere else.
