Name: Shipwreck Lodge
Where: This one’s pretty hard to miss. Not only because of its inimitable architecture, but because it’s the only property within Namibia’s Skeleton Coast National Park. Expect rolling fog, skeletal shipwrecks, clay castles and a medley of marine and desert-adapted wildlife. Oh, and some of the most incredible views you’ve ever seen.
Rooms: There are 10 cabins that line the landscape here. Each one has been designed to evoke the look of the enigmatic shipwrecks that punctuate the coast. There are two family rooms, and all boast en suite bathrooms and decks.
Activities: You’ll want to make the most of the incredible surroundings during your stay. Take a day excursion to Mowe Bay seal colony, stopping at shipwrecks along the way. Enjoy a sundowner drive to the roaring dunes. Or for a surprisingly eco-friendly way to explore the locale, hop aboard a quad bike or a sand board. To see the clay castles, you can head out in a 4×4 along the Hoarusib River, and take in some of the incredible desert-adapted wildlife along the way. Beach bums meanwhile, an settle in for one of the most dramatically beautiful beach lunches you’ll ever experience.
Great for: Remote and hauntingly beautiful it might be, but there’s plenty of life to be found here. It might come as rather a surprise to hear that lions, brown hyenas and elephants all occur in the area. Less surprising are the marine species such as Cape fur seals and the incredible birdlife that soars overhead.
Children: This is a fantastic place for children. We welcome youngster of all ages to revel in life in their very own shipwreck. Ooh argh me hearties!
