Herbivore Conservation in Khwai

There are surveys aplenty being carried out in Khwai Private Reserve, with the focus firmly fixed on the herbivores in the concession.

The most frequently sighted large herbivores in the area are elephants, buffalos and impalas, and careful attention is being paid to their population trends, which became increasingly apparent when the dry season survey was carried out in September.

Not only do these surveys allow us a far clearer understanding of the reserve’s large herbivore population, it also equips our rangers with important research skills. The study has also helped our partners, Round River Conservation, to develop and test surveying methods which have become the government recommended method for wildlife surveying in Botswana.
