Safari Itinerary

Day 1-2: Lekkerwater Beach Lodge

The De Hoop Nature Reserve stretches along the southern coast of the Western Cape and Lekkerwater is situated approximately halfway. It’s here that you will spend your first two days enjoying guided and unguided marine and nature walks around the lodge. Set overlooking a five-kilometre stretch of pristine beach, the seven off-grid suites have carefully been designed to let ocean views take centre stage. Floor-to-ceiling windows deliver remarkable sea vistas from every corner of the room, while the protected outdoor deck provides a perfect oasis of privacy.

Lekkerwater is a coastal escape surrounded by the rich natural history of the region, from the endemic fynbos and inter-tidal ecosystems to the remarkable mammal and birdlife. You may spot schools of surfing dolphins, countless bird sightings (including the endangered black oystercatcher) while enjoying marine life thriving amongst the gullies and rock pools. Between July and November, Southern Right whales migrate here from the Antarctica to calve and breed in the warmer waters close to shore – making this an exceptional whale watching experience.

Day 3-5: De Hoop Collection

On day three you’ll embark on a leisurely self-guided 6-to-9-hour coastal walk from Lekkerwater to the De Hoop Collection, ending at Koppie Allen. This is 15km of endless Indian Ocean views, consisting of a combination of beautiful sandy beaches, limestone karst rock platforms, blow holes, natural swimming pools, caves, ravines and rocky cliffs. Inland from the coast, discover large areas of lowland coastal fynbos. You will also get to walk a remarkable section of the Whale Trail.

Your accommodation will be at De Mond Villa. A comfy villa with five ensuite bedrooms, incredible views, a boma, a swimming pool and overlooking the beautiful Ramsar vlei which is home to spectacular bird life, wild bush pigs, otters, Rock Dassies and herds of Eland. Here you’ll enjoy a ±14km guided walk around the Vlei, exploring the rich fauna and flora with a stop for lunch and a boat ferry. Evenings will be spent enjoying dinners under the stars and drinks around a crackling fire.

Logistics / Seasons

De Hoop nature reserve is a beautiful destination year-round its gentle charms changing with the seasons. During summer (Nov-March) the days are perfect for coastal adventure. Use the fresh morning air to hike out into the fynbos, then cool off with a swim in the tidal pools during the heat of the day.

In April-May and September-October the fynbos comes to life, and sunsets are all about lazy evenings enjoyed with a glass of fine South African wine in hand. Winter, through to the start of summer (July – November) is when the Southern Right whales arrive, congregating offshore to calve, mate and generally cavort in the warm seas. This walk is without doubt a spectacular luxury walking adventure, no matter what time of the year you go on vacation.
